Dan River Baptist Church is pastored by Reverend Douglas W. Gibson. He began his ministry here on July 1, 2004. Prior to his arrival at Dan River, he was pastor of First Baptist, Riceville, and Liberty Baptist in Pittsylvania County, New Chapel Baptist in Campbell County, and Hillcrest Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia where he served for 18 years.
Rev. Gibson has made numerous accomplishments throughout his career in the ministry. He has served as a representative to the Virginia Baptist General Board; as a State Leader in the Youth Bible Drills and Children's Bible Drills; as a Youth Consultant for the Department of Discipleship Training; and led a number of workshops and conferences at Eagle Eyrie Baptist Conference Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Along with the already mentioned endeavors, the Rev. Gibson has served in numerous Associational capacities which include Advisory Board for Associational Missions; President of the Pastor's Conference; Vice Moderator; and Chairman of the Program Committee, and Finance Committee.
While residing in Suffolk, the Rev. Gibson was a member of the board of directors, and Vice Chairman for Meals on Wheels. He was also on the Suffolk Advisory Committee on Human Resources as a member of the Ruritan National Organization.
Over the years, he has received many awards and honors for which he is very grateful. He is extremely thankful for the awards presented by youth organizations. Among those awards is the All-Star Award by the 4-H Clubs of America. He was also honored as Man-of-the-Year by a local chapter.
Church Secretary, Gail Martin
Gail joined the Dan River Baptist Church staff in March, 2000. Before moving to South Boston in June, 1998 she worked as secretary of Conway Baptist Church in Conway, North Carolina. Shortly after the move she began working as secretary at Mid Atlantic Test and Balance in South Boston.
She and her husband, Donnie, joined Dan River Baptist Church in June 1999.
Gail taught Sunday School and directed Children’s Choir at Conway Baptist Church for over 20 years. She has been active in choir since she was a child, and served as Assistant Music Director at Conway Baptist. She has led music at Dan River when needed. She was a member of the Hand bell Choir at Conway and has also participated in the hand bell choir at Dan River. She and Donnie have two sons and four beautiful grandchildren.
Financial Secretary, Joyce Murray
Mrs. Murray came to Dan River Baptist Church in 1983 and has served as a member of the church staff ever since. She and her husband Rev. Horace Murray have lived in the area since 1978. Rev. Murray is the former pastor of Second Baptist Church in South Boston as well as Averett Baptist Church in the Clarksville, Va area. Upon Reverend Murray's retirement they chose to make Dan River their church home. They have two children and four grandchildren all of whom live in Winston Salem, NC.
Adult Choir Director, Tim Davis
Tim has been a member of Dan River since he moved here with his wife, Patty, in 1980. He has been a member of the choir for about twenty-nine years. Tim has been the choir director for a total of about 10 years. His full time occupation is as a department manager with a local electrical contractor. Tim has two children, Brad, age 23 who lives here in South Boston, and Jenny who is married and lives in Myrtle Beach,SC. When Tim is not working or involved with the choir he likes to golf and work around the house. One of Tim's greatest joys is spending time with his grandchildren, Carter and Harper.
